Tidy and prepare
Brushstroke Violas

Today's trip to the plot, accompanied by a very able helper saw lots and lots of weeding done, and the trimming of a plum tree. The first steps to getting the plot ready for the year ahead and for taking down the tree completely.

It was lovely to see the beautiful 'Brushstroke' violas have come up. There is such a variety of colours, they are vibrant and they are edible. I am sure that they will feature in some salads at some point. For now though they will just be admired. I got the seeds from She Grows Veg.

I took some photos when we arrived, the weather was lovely and already time to think about suncream. Aim for the day a general tidy up!

The general tidy up went pretty well. We were out for a couple of hours and you could see the difference that all the effort made. I am still a little sad about the decision to remove the tree, but it was poorly placed and not particularly productive. I think I will look at step-over options to replace the remaining fence... but that is a project for another time!

After the weeding

Rather than putting the brassica plants straight into the compost I desided to chop up the waste and leave it on the bed. The bed is not going to get used until I start planting out in May so the clippings will act as some amount of mulch/weed suppression. The only exception was the thick stems which were chopped small and put into the composter.

The 'missing' tree and the chop and drop in the brassica bed.

Time at the plot: a couple of hours

Spend: nothing today

Mood: pleased with progress
