First Project of the Year - Jan '26
I had a very friendly helper at the plot today. My brother brought the muscles, and helped me out with a big pile of tools.
We had spotted that the fencing, installed by the previous plot holder was starting to rot. The unprotected posts straight into the ground were getting far too wet and with a little more wind was likely to fall over. There is similar fencing at the back and the front of the plot. For now we have just removed the back section.
I do not plan on replacing the fencing. While it is nice to have clear devision of the plot area, I think this is provided by the path way. The downside of the fence was that it makes the edge of the plot less accessible, and also it provides a safe haven for weeds. Also, having fences along the sides of the paths makes them narrow, and reduces the ability to bring wheelbarrows and similar right onto the plot.
Part two of the project was removing sharp screws, and tidying up the shed so that we could store all of the wood. There is whole load of useable material there now - will have to work out a way to repurpose it.

We got a little damp today, there rain held off for the most part. All the essentials are in my wheeled trug thing. Also you might notice that I found some more blue tubing. It is a nice long section so that will come in super handy in the coming season. I also have a long handled weeding tool. The forks at the Botton are not perfect, but in the wet, and not-to-compacted soil it will be perfectly fine. It is the kind you jab into the ground over the weeds and then twist.
Mood: Soggy Success
I try not to totally close down the plot and keep it productive throughout the year - but I still like to use the quieter season to get jobs done.
What are your winter jobs?
