April - Where are the showers??

April - Where are the showers??
A trellis made of material which was pruned (hacked off) from trees on my plot prior to me accepting it. The thinner bits were still really flexible and it seemed like a good way to make use of the 'waste'

Ordering stuff online can be a bit of a hassle sometimes. Dealing with couriers and customer services and has taken up more time than I would have liked this week. But the good news is my seeds and strawbs have arrived. The even better news is that now the clocks have changed it was light enough to go to the plot after work and get them in the ground, all 36 of them. Three kinds. They have gone in beds that have other mystery fruit. Looking at the spacing on a neighbouring plot I don't think I have put them too close together.

Bare root strawberry plants having a good soak before planting in the fruit beds

The patch with the onions, garlic and roots is looking good. I managed to walk the dog, go to the plot and then grab some takeaway for dinner all between work and 8 pm. I am quite happy with that.

What an excellent day at the plot. I had some ideas of what I wanted to do but no fixed plans and it worked. After arriving at about 11:30 I trundled off to home bargains thinking I could grab some secateurs and I came back with canes, blood and bone fertiliser and a wheeled trug thingy. The fertiliser is for the strawberries, I will top-dress the soil with it, but I need to wait for a less windy day. There was far too much of a breeze to spread dusty fertiliser today.

I weeded the 'legumes' bed which I thought would take longer than it did and then I went around everywhere else and did a little weed. Next using my new snipper things I constructed a trellis thing for my sugar-peas to climb before grabbing some compost from the plot shop. I planted 2 rows of onions (from sets) and a row of carrots from the Lidl seed tape. I gave the strawberries and the rhubarb a really good soak. I dug a little trench and filled it with compost to make a home for the peas and also prepared a stripe for some California Poppies before realising that I had not packed the poppy seeds, oops.

The plot kitchen was a godsend today and I discovered that I really like fruit and barley grapefruit squash. Two pints of that kept me well hydrated on what was a really hot day. In addition to drinking a good amount I kept myself slathered in suncream, which gathered an additional protective layer of dusty mud and put a chair in the shade of the plum tree.

I think I was out and about for around four hours today and the plot stuff did not stop when I for home. After tea I went back into the garden to plant up some more seeds. I planted:
Sweetcorn
Sugar-peas
Parsnips
Chard (a red one)
Kalettes.

I stopped planting things when I ran out of compost.

Mood: Accomplished

View from the shade of the un-tended part of the plot, the tarp is going a great job for now of covering the uncultivated are. My trug / wheelbarrow from home bargains is at the back by the fence.
